Day 7: Arms+One Mile

You know, sometimes life gets in the way and you get behind and forget to do a lot of what you have planned to do. The great thing about fitness is that if you quite working out, you can just start it back up again. The sooner you start it back up, the easier it will be. In my case, when life gets in the way then just take a 6 day break.

Now that I am thoroughly rested from the workouts last week, it is time to get back to business. Today is ARMS! I also plan on running a mile this morning with my beautiful puppy since it is the first day over 40 degrees when I woke up. Here is a picture of him from about 2 weeks ago. He is a little bit bigger now and going on 5 months old. He may come up to my lower thigh but he is still just a baby. His name is Christmas Atticus. We got him a couple weeks before Christmas so my son wanted to call him Christmas. I then attached my favorite name on to that because you can not name a German Shepherd anything better than after Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird. And yes, I know my German shepherd is white. I picked him because I always wanted one and people are not as scared of him right off because they don’t know what he is. Then I tell them, “Oh, yeah. He is a German shepherd,” and they look surprised and almost all take a step back as though he were some wild beast.

Anyway, back on topic. Arms + 1 mile. I will also add this mile time to my progress page because it has been so long since I have been running. I know the time will be slow even if I were running it without my puppy. This workout came from Back On Pointe. It is amazing how many times her workouts end up on Pinterest. Thank you Talia C. for pinning this just for me even though you have no idea who I am.

Oh yeah. And I got tired of my usual post title “Getting in Shape with Pinterest”. It was getting old.

Let me just say that I should get my dog certified as a personal trainer. In the past he was too little to take running for long ways so I would just walk him down all my routs, sprinting for maybe 50-100 yards because he wanted to. I slowly increased the distance over time with 4 miles being our longest walk about a month ago. Two weeks ago I took him running for a mile like I did today and he was thoroughly confused because we were running so much without stopping. Today he took it head on. I took him out for his morning potty break and told him we were going running when he finished. He remembered what it was because he grabbed the leash in his mouth and started jumping and pulling me down the road. He also knew that subconsciously my goal was to do the first 1/2 mile without stopping. We got about 100 yards from the half way point and I was slowing down and getting tired. What did he do? He sped up and made me run. Once we got to the half way point I made him let me walk and he dragged me along at a fast walking pace. In all I had to walk 3 times during the second half, but Atticus would not let me walk slow and would not let me walk more than 50 feet. When we turned the corner to our street we were about a block from our house and I said, “Come on. Lets go check the mail.” (I start/stop all my routs at the mail box) He charged for it. Now on our street this blockĀ  is not flat. It drops down at least 15 feet minimum from its lowest point to its highest point. You turn the corner and then start going down hill, half a block later you’re at the bottom and then head back up with our box being on the very top. He sprinted right to the box, while dragging me behind him. When all was said and done I ran it in 11:51. Not bad considering I haven’t really run a mile in 6+ months. Maybe I will be able to get to my old college time requirement of 6:30 by the end of the summer if I run with Atticus several times a week.

Well. Let me begin by saying my legs are sore. Boy oh boy. I had a good hard working line up for today originally, but I think it will be best to just stick to my favorite yoga workout today. I feel just doing this one will do me some good in the achy muscle department.

Day 5 Getting in Shape with Pinterest

I am a little sore from yesterday evening, but I got up early and pushed on for this one.

The all cardio challange

I did not want to go outside in the cold to do this work out and I did not want to risk waking up my son by jumping rope in my living room so I modified it slightly. We have tile floors so I simply jumped back and forth over the line as quickly as I could. Since jumping rope also has some arm action going on, I grabbed a pair of one pound weights and pretended they were my jump rope. I held my arms just like you would with a jump rope, keeping my arms bent around a 90 degree angle. When jumping rope quickly, your arms do not really move at all for the most part so it was an easy switch to make. Simply hold the weights firmly in your hands and rotate the weights in a tiny circular motion. Try to keep your tiny circles no more than 1-2 inches wide. This works as a pretty decent jump rope alternative.

I took a 30 second water break, but when I get more in shape I think I will try this again going through the whole thing without a water break and then eventually going all the way through from beginning to end and then take the break before doing the whole thing again.

Day 4 Getting in Shape with Pinterest

Today I am doing an all over body workout. I found this one today. It looks like a tough one. I can not wait till my son goes to bed for me to do this one. With basically everyone in my family being sick, everyone has a messed up sleep pattern, including my son. I repined this from Katherine and it is originally from Back On Pointe‘s tumblr page. My “Dancers Legs” workout on Day 1 is also from Back On Pointe. You can find it and others on my Pinterest fitness board.

All over body weight workout

I had to do a quick internet search. I was not sure what some of these were. Just click on the name to go to an explanation of what they are.

Full Bridge– I took this to be a 1 minute bridge. ***I had to stop at 0:30 and then after a second I did the remaining 0:30

Short Bridges- No link here. Your guess is as good as mine. I went up and down while keeping good form for 15 reps.

Bird-Dogs– For this one all the examples had you hold the pose for several seconds. Since the work out here says 20 bird-dogs, I did 20 bird-dogs on each side, holding the pose for 3 seconds before switching sides. So for example I held up my right arm/left leg for 3 seconds, then the left arm/right leg for 3 seconds and then back to the right arm/left leg for 3 seconds and on and on like so until I did 20 on each side. A total of 40.

Oblique crunches– I was not going to look this up originally. I thought I knew what these were but I was wrong. This video first caught my eye because I saw some nice abs on the row of videos on the right side of the screen. Then I saw it was about oblique crunches. Needless to say, I watched the video and got to watch some nice eye candy show me how I have been doing these crunches wrong the whole time. Its not ever your traditional “crunch” at all. Its closer to a side plank than a crunch.

My warm up and cool down will be some of the easier poses from my favorite yoga workout.

Veggie Chips

Hey everyone!

Today is my day of rest which means it is time to get to cooking. I got to thinking about it, and I think it would be a good idea to start giving credit to the “pinner” as well as the source of the pin. From now on I will also let you know who the pin came from. I will not supply links to their personal board though.

Today I’m telling you about Zucchini Chips via Sarah Jane on Pinterest. The recipe comes from Vittles and Bits. She has a lot of really delicious looking dishes on her site.

I did not have any zucchini on hand but I had plenty of squash for a future side dish of fried squash which my family loves. I also used a different spray oil than the canola oil she called for. Other than that, I did everything that she called for on her website. If you go to her site, everything is described perfectly. In a nutshell, you slice one zucchini really thin, spray a foil lined pan, lay out slices on the foil, spray again, season lightly. It was really simple aside from the fact that I do not have a mandolin slicer so I had to do it all by hand. For the seasoning I used a Greek seasoning. It is one of those pre-made spices that tastes good on everything and you can never have too much of it. My younger brother swears by it when cooking… When he cooks something other than bacon that is.

Veggie Chips (adapted from Vittles and Bits: Zucchini Chips)

  • 1 yellow squash
  • cooking spray (I use Smart Balance)
  • seasoning (I use Cavender’s All Purpose Greek Seasoning)

Preheat your oven to 225 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil, and spray with the cooking spray.

Slice the squash into thin slices, about as thick as a quarter. You can use a mandolin slicer or slice them by hand like I did. However if you slice them by hand you might end up with some that were a little too crispy and others that were not crispy enough.

Lay out slices on prepared baking sheet, and spray tops lightly with more cooking spray. Sprinkle with whatever seasonings you choose. Remember that less is more when seasoning these chips. They will shrink so i little will become a lot.

Place in preheated oven and bake 40 minutes. Rotate baking sheet, and bake an additional 20-40 minutes, until chips are browned and crisped to your liking. They are best eaten when done because if they sit out too long they may become soft again.

These chips tasted so good. I will definitely make them again. The only down side was that they took so long to make. They are not a quick meal dish at all.

Day 3 Getting in Shape with Pinterest

Hey everyone. The Core Challenge from yesterday was pretty tough. I had to modify the push-ups to do them from my knees and the bridge was hopeless. I got 17 seconds into the first one and my arms started shaking really bad. Then by time I got to the second bridge I couldn’t even get off the ground. Other than that I was able to do it. My abs are burning. I never got to the second arm workout however because of sick family members. I plan on doing the arm exercises today.

My original plan for today was to just go walk a total of 2.61 miles. I coach a 3rd-4th grade girls basketball team and the church they play at is that far away. I have been dropped off and walked home before, so I though today would be a great day to do it again. My darling 2 year old son will be joining me in his fancy jogging stroller. He loves to go with mommy to play basketball.

Tomorrow will be my day of rest. Since I will not be working out tomorrow, I will post a great healthy recipe courtesy my fellow Pinterest users.

Day 2 Getting in Shape with Pinterest (“GSP”)

Wow. I am sore. My hamstrings and back are the worst. I will update yesterdays post to tell how it went. That yoga page really kicked my butt. I will have to post that picture somewhere in a way showing what all I could actually do that way I can come back in a year and see how much I improved. I was thinking I would do it every day like a warm up but for now it will have to wait and be done maybe 3 times a weeks till I get better at it.

As a side note, I decided to number my days I spend “Getting in Shape with Pinterest.” I will go all the way up to 365 days (not counting break days) and then decide if I will continue numbering or not. Also i will shorten it to GSP so that it is quicker to type. Yes, I am lazy.

Today I will focus on my abs and arms. I want to be sure and rotate my muscle groups since my legs and back are sore today. Fortunately, your abs are a muscle group that you can work every day! Getting in shape with Pinterest

Well. I have gone running all of a hand full of times since my last update… Go me! I need to do something to get my behind up and moving. Luckily, I have a job where I spend a lot of time sitting around doing nothing for a good part of the day, so I spend it on Pinterest. I always come across these pictures that outline entire “mini-workouts” on one image and then I re-post them onto my board labeled “Fitness Stuff”. Yesterday I decided it was time to do something about it and I decided that maybe I could use Pinterest to get into shape. I may not be good about getting up and running in the winter but I can at least get rid of this spare tire around my waist and the extra jiggle forming on my arms and legs. Pinterest my not be able to get me to run a marathon, but if it can at least get me to loose a few pounds before the weather warms up then I will be glad. I look forward to any weight that I can loose before I get the courage to run again. The lighter I am then the less pounding my knees and calves will take. (I have tendinitis in my lower calf and bad knees from basketball for those who do not know.)

Today I will start with these two work outs. The first I will try and do every day because I am loosing flexibility.

***update 3/1/13: I am so sore. I didn’t realize it until time to go to bed. My legs were a little tingly for about an hour but after that I was fine. Then about 9pm I couldn’t get up off the couch! My hamstrings, inner thighs, back and shoulders were the culprits with my hamstrings and back being the worst. Then it took me several minutes to work the soreness out when I got up this morning. I will have to edit the yoga picture to show how I did yesterday that way I can compare it to how I do in the future. I think it kicked my butt the most. 1/3 of it I couldn’t do at all, 1/3 of it I had to modify for either strength or flexibility reasons, then the remaining I was able to do aside from the general lack of flexibility.***
